Faux Locs or Natural Locs: Two Different Services

The word “locs” covers two very different things, so let’s be clear from the start:

  • Faux locs are a protective style. Extension hair is wrapped around a braid or twist of your own hair to create locs that look real — and come out when you are ready for a change.
  • Natural locs are your own hair, locked over time. We help you start them and keep them neat with regular retwists.

Both need clean sections and the right tension at the root. Kekem African Braids is led by an owner with more than 10 years of hairstyling experience. We braid, twist and maintain — we do not cut or color hair.

Faux Locs: Choose Your Length and Thickness

Length

Faux locs done at Kekem African Braids in Spring, TX

Shoulder, mid-back or waist length. Longer faux locs take more hair and more time, and they are heavier to wear.

Thickness

Thinner locs look delicate and move more; thicker locs give a bold look with fewer sections. Weight matters here: we will help you pick a thickness your scalp will be comfortable carrying.

Finish

Smooth or textured, neat ends or a slightly distressed look. Bring a photo and we will match the finish.

Faux locs start at $220. See real sets in our gallery.

Natural Locs: Starter Locs, Retwists and Maintenance

Starter Locs

Starting locs is about the foundation: section sizes you will live with for years. We plan the size and the grid with you before the first section goes in, based on your density and the look you want long term.

Loc Retwist — from $220

Loc retwist with neat roots and clean parts

New growth at the root is twisted back into each loc so your locs stay separate, neat and defined. A retwist also includes tidying the parts so the grid stays clean.

Loc Maintenance

Regular visits keep new growth under control and your parts sharp. Clients who stay on a steady schedule usually find each visit easier than the last. Ask us how often your hair needs it.

Clean Roots and Even Sections

Locs show their foundation every day, so we check with you before you leave that:

  • parts are clean and follow the grid;
  • roots are neat, with no loose hair left out;
  • faux locs are the same thickness and length across your head;
  • nothing feels too tight at the hairline.

If something is off, we fix it in the chair.

Bring Your Inspiration Photo

For faux locs, the photo shows us the length, thickness and finish you want. For natural locs, a photo of the size you are aiming for helps us plan your sections. We will be honest about what your hair can carry. First time? Text your photo to (832) 837-5488.

How Your Appointment Works

  1. Book on our booking page, or call or text us. Walk-ins are welcome when a braider is free; faux locs take time, so book ahead.
  2. Prepare. Come with your hair washed and detangled for faux locs. For a retwist, come with clean locs.
  3. Arrive. Park for free outside our Sawdust Road salon.
  4. During. We check in on tension, especially at the hairline.
  5. Timing. We open at 7:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays — handy for long faux loc installs.

Caring for Locs in Houston’s Humidity

In the humid air of Spring and north Houston, the biggest risk for locs is moisture that never fully dries.

  • After washing, dry your locs completely before you tie them up.
  • Sleep in a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase.
  • Keep products light; heavy waxes and butters build up inside locs.
  • Faux locs: mist the scalp lightly and smooth frizz with mousse.
  • Natural locs: stay on a regular retwist schedule so new growth does not tangle.

Faux Locs & Locs: Your Questions Answered

How much are faux locs in Spring, TX?

Can you start my locs?

Yes. Kekem African Braids starts new locs. We plan the section size with you first, then quote the service.

Do you color or cut locs?

No. Kekem African Braids braids, twists and maintains hair, but does not cut or color.
